John Richard Lowndes French, 2nd Earl of Ypres (6 July – 5 April ) was the son of the British field marshal and the first commander of the British Expeditionary Force (BEF) in World War I Sir John French.

He was born near Morpeth in Northumberland where his father was stationed. He followed his father by joining the army and he served with the Royal Field. Made Earl of Ypres in JuneFrench also received a retirement grant of £50, in recognition of his services.

Contracting cancer of the bladder, he died onwhile at Deal Castle. Following a funeral, French was buried at St.

Mary the Virgin Churchyard in Ripple, Kent. Earl of Ypres was a title in the Peerage of the United Kingdom. It was a victory title, referring to the Flemish city of Ypres, which gave its name the Salient of Life of Field-Marshal Sir John French, site of extremely bloody fighting in the Great War.
